The Challenge

The ferry system between Salvador and Itaparica is outdated, operating essentially the same way it has for decades regularly causing 3 hour delays. With increasing vehicle traffic and a growing population, it has become a consistent bottleneck, causing long delays even in the off-season. During peak season, wait times can extend to 6–9 hours. The government has been working on a bridge project signing a deal in 2020 to alleviate these issues. The urgency for infrastructure improvements intensified after a tragic 2017 incident, where a small ferry capsized, resulting in many deaths, putting further pressure on the government to expedite solutions.
